Abstract

This study offers a critical and systematic evaluation of Ignaz Goldziher’s contentious hypotheses regarding the Qurʾān, Prophethood, and the Makkan and Madinan structural periods as articulated in his seminal work, Introduction to Islamic Law and Theology. Goldziher posits that the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) spiritual experiences were primary products of psychological meditation and socio-environmental contemplation rather than metaphysical, divine revelation (waḥy). Furthermore, he frames the gradual, chronological textualization of the Qurʾān as a reactive phenomenon mirroring contemporary political and historical developments.

Employing a rigorous qualitative and analytical methodology grounded in classical Islamic hermeneutics and intellectual history, this paper deconstructs Goldziher's assumptions. It evaluates his claims against the normative frameworks of the Qurʾān, authentic Hadīth corpora, and foundational Islamic scholarship.

The findings reveal that Goldziher’s hermeneutical framework relies heavily on reductive historical-critical methods and Eurocentric psychological reductionism, which fundamentally misinterpret the Islamic ontology of waḥy. By contrasting his critique with classical textual evidence, this study demonstrates that the gradualism of Qurʾānic revelation (tanjīm al-Qurʾān) was an intentional manifestation of divine pedagogical wisdom aimed at societal, moral, and legal transformation, rather than a fragmented historical byproduct.

Ultimately, this paper argues that Goldziher’s objections stem from an epistemological misalignment with sacred texts, thereby necessitating a critical reassessment of classical Orientalist scholarship within contemporary Islamic thought. This research contributes significantly to the fields of Orientalist studies, Qurʾānic textual history, and comparative theological methodology.
